Understanding Lighting Color Temperature

Lighting has a central role in everything, especially when it comes to interior design. It can transform colors, textures, furniture, and the way a room is perceived on the whole. Before introducing lighting into a room, it is important to get familiar with its qualities. One of the first qualities to explore is the color temperature of light.

Lighting color temperature

According to the Kelvin color temperature scale, there are three major lighting color temperatures: warm, neutral, and cool. The Kelvin color temperatures used indoors range between 2000K and 6500K. Less than 2000K temperature light bulb provides warm light and is similar to candlelight. In contrast, above 5600K light is cold and mimics natural daylight. Warm light has a red-yellowish appearance, cold light has a white-bluish appearance.

Cold light

Cold light colors provide clear and bright lighting. Natural lighting and cold light bulbs make a perfect combination. It is usually used for offices and working spaces. Cold light with its silver appearance will be effective in kitchens, too.

Neutral light

Neutral light is between cold and warm color temperatures at around 4000K. It provides clear, sharp lighting and has a white-bluish appearance. Neutral light does not hurt eyes and will be a perfect choice for bathrooms.

Warm light

Warm light is used in the living rooms and bedrooms. With its soft green and red tones, the warm lighting can contribute to a romantic atmosphere in a room. Note that warm light loves neutral color pieces of furniture to create a cozy atmosphere.

The color temperature of light affects people's moods, feelings, and emotions. Warm light is associated with a cozy and romantic atmosphere, while cold color temperatures get people energized. The combination of the two is able to provide proper indoor lighting.
